Hospital, inpatient Medical Oncology Service -Job Summary - - -
-The Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider provides direct
patient care on the inpatient medical oncology unit and works in
collaboration with attending physicians and other medical
professionals by collecting and documenting data,
obtaining/ordering diagnostic and therapeutic procedures,
laboratory studies and professional consultations. The age-specific
scope of practice is between 18 and older. - -Job Duties and
Responsibilities
- Promote and maintain high standards of patient care throughout
the continuum of cancer diagnosis. -
- Elicit detailed and accurate patient histories and perform
through physical examinations.
- Order appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests to determine
medical and post treatment diagnoses, patient conditions, treatment
toxicities.
- Formulate appropriate treatment plans with critical thinking
skills and high-level clinical judgement including prescribing
appropriate medications.
- Chart patient progress maintaining detailed and accurate health
records
- Participate in clinical research projects and understand the
importance of documentation of toxicities and data collection.
- Communication among multi-disciplinary teams to support patient
care.
- Collaborating, supporting and building strong relationships
with supervising, back-up supervising physicians, APP colleagues,
and team members.
- Participate in education of patients, family members, new
staff, students and other learners.
- See scheduled and unscheduled patients.
- Attend program required meetings.
- Maintain up to date clinical and professional knowledge via
approved CME.
- Protect patient confidentiality, maintain ethics and abide by
North Carolina laws and Duke Health System policies.

- - - Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner Program
for adult carePA: - - - - - - - - Graduate of ARC accredited
Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant Program
-CertificationNP: - - - - - - - Any NP certification that treats
adults (FNP, ANP, AGNP, AGACNP, etc.)PA: - - - - - - - PA-C
-LicensureNP: - - - - - - - Unrestricted RN licensure issued by or
recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as a NPPA: -
- - - - - - Unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with
authorization to practice as PA -Both: - - - Federal and State DEA
independent license with prescriptive authority -ExperienceAPP
experience is preferred, ideally Oncology related, but recent or
new APP grads graduating by August 2024 are welcome to apply.
-Additional preferred skills and qualifications:
- Ability to work in a team-oriented inpatient unit
- Willingness to be flexible and available to support the
team.
- Analytical thinking skills with curiosity and ability to
investigate and diagnose.
- Competence with technology
- Excellent communication skills and customer service skills
- Experience working independently and as a part of a team

HoursMonday through Sunday including weekends and holidays, 12-
hour day shift, 7A-7P. 13 shifts per 28 days. - Duke is an
